Overview

Navitas is ready to invest in you!  We are seeking an experienced Research Scientist II in Ann Arbor, Michigan that will work as part of the research & development team, will work under the direction of R&D Management to create, develop and characterize energy storage (lithium/lithium-ion battery) materials, process technologies, electrode and other cell subcomponent embodiments, and cells.   The Research Scientist will propose, plan, direct, and execute R&D projects and serve as a technical point of contact with customers, partners and vendors. 

 

Estimated salary range:  $80,000-$100,000.

 

Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education and training.

Responsibilities

  • Lead R&D projects and tasks as assigned.
  • Technical ideation to advance lithium/lithium-ion battery technology and adoption.
  • Generate and execute R&D work plans, test plans, and work requests.
  • Conduct chemistry-type laboratory work to prepare battery material samples, battery electrodes, and lithium battery test cells.
  • Operate lab equipment, including cell assembly equipment, mixing and coating equipment, cell testing equipment, glove boxes, optical and electron microscopes, and analytical instruments.
  • Write, issue, and present data, conclusions, reports, and presentations to internal staff, customers, partners, and vendors.
  • Test data work up, visualization, interpretation and reporting.
  • Utilize cell models and tools to design and analyze electrodes and cells.
  • Support bid and proposal generation activities as directed.
  • Participate in conferences 1-4x per year.
  • Participate in lab management functions (equipment/assets/area hygiene, maintenance and management; chemical hygiene; environment, health and safety; quality system; etc.) as assigned.
  • Comply with Navitas policies and procedures.
  • On site presence is essential and necessary including weekends and holidays if deemed.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical engineering, physics, materials science, materials engineering, or similar degree areas. New graduates from recognized battery programs will be considered.
  • 4+ years of battery, electrochemical, or energy storage work - as a grad student, postdoc, or professional - is required.
  • Lithium battery experience (lithium-ion, lithium metal, lithium sulfur, solid state battery, silicon anode, beyond-lithium battery, solvent-free electrode process, etc.) is required.
  • Lithium sulfur experience is highly preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of the current battery research and development landscape.
  • Supervisory and task/project management experience (or equivalent) is preferred.
  • Experience in one or more areas is required: battery industry, materials synthesis, materials testing/analysis, electrode mixing/coating, lithium cell assembly, battery cell formation, battery cell testing.
  • Proposal writing experience and success in winning funding is highly preferred.
  • A professional network including university, US national laboratory, and industry partners and contacts, is preferred.
